maxdown is built around one idea: what you write stays with you. Here's exactly what that means, for the app and for this website.

The app

Everything you write stays on your device. maxdown has no account, no sign-in, and no cloud. Your files live as plain .md files on your own disk and never leave your machine unless you move them yourself.

App telemetry

To understand how maxdown is used and to fix what breaks, the app sends anonymous usage data and crash reports to our own analytics server. We self-host OpenPanel, an open-source tool, so this data never reaches a third party. It's limited to:

• anonymous usage events: which features get used (e.g. export, keyboard shortcuts);
• basic technical context: your operating system and the maxdown version;
• a random install identifier, so we can count installations without knowing who you are;
• crash reports: error details and stack traces when something goes wrong.

It never includes the content of your documents, their file names, or where they live on your disk.

This is on by default, but you stay in control: you can turn it off at any time in Settings → Privacy, and the app works exactly the same with it off.

This website

This site (not the app) uses the same self-hosted OpenPanel instance to see what's working: which pages get visited and which builds get downloaded. It records things like the page viewed, your approximate location and device (derived from your IP address and browser user-agent), and the site that referred you. All of it stays on our own server.

We don't use it to build advertising profiles, and we never sell or share this data.

Downloads

The app builds are served from our own server. Like any web server, it keeps standard access logs (IP address, timestamp, and the file requested) for a short period, to keep the service secure and to count downloads.

What we don't do

• No ads, ever.
• No third-party analytics: we self-host it, so your data stays with us.
• No selling or renting your data.
• No account, so there's nothing to leak.

Your choices

You can block analytics with any content blocker or a “Do Not Track” setting. The site works exactly the same. If you'd like to know what, if anything, we hold about you, or want it removed, just get in touch.

We'll update this page if our practices change, and bump the date at the top.
